Overview

In collaboration with the CEO of Aegis Security, I developed an online course designed to equip civilians and private sector professionals with strategies to prevent, prepare for, and respond to active shooter situations.

The course served as a topper course, preparing participants for an in-person simulated workshop, and was adopted by high-profile venues, including the Staples Center (now Crypto.com Arena).

My Role

My role encompassed project leadership, visual design, and eLearning Development.

Project Leadership

Managed all aspects of the project, including:

  • Defining project scope, budget, and timelines.
  • Setting up project tracking systems.
  • Facilitating all stakeholder meetings to ensure alignment.
  • Ensuring the project was completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Visual Design

Developed the project’s visual identity, including:

  • Creating the Style Guide to ensure consistency across the interactive course.
  • Producing all banners, iconography, graphics, and custom vector art.

eLearning Development

Build the entire course from start to finish and all multimedia elements, including:

  • Developing interactive knowledge checks, simulations, and complex scenario-based activities in Storyline.
  • Ensuring a seamless user experience and LMS integration.

Approach

This course was designed to engage employees in realistic workplace violence and active shooter scenarios while prioritizing learner well-being and psychological safety.

Using a blend of experiential and cognitive learning strategies, the course emphasized key safety concepts and decision-making under stress.

Learners were prepared for high-risk situations through:

Scaffolding approach guiding learners from foundational concepts to complex decision-making.

Interactive de-escalation activities to recognize and respond to early warning signs of violence.

Scenario-based interactions replicating high-pressure environments for real-time decision-making.

Final simulation activity where real-time decisions lead to different outcomes and learning opportunities.

Process

A structured ADDIE-based approach guided the design and development of this course, incorporating iterative revision cycles at each phase to refine content and ensure project goals were met.

1. Analysis

Analyzing project requirements by aligning training with federal and state guidelines, consulting industry stakeholders, and evaluating existing materials.

2. Design

Developing a Design Document outlining learning outcomes and instructional strategies, creating a Style Guide with mockups, and prototyping key interactive and UI elements.

3. Development

Building the course and all assets with various software, ensuring accessibility and responsiveness, incorporating stakeholder feedback, and refining interactions and visuals.

4. Implementation

Deployed the course into Moodle LMS for testing and launch. Ensured SCORM compatibility with additional LMS platforms to support seamless integration across workplace environments.

5. Evaluation

Conducted pre- and post-assessments, learner feedback analysis, and performance tracking during the live workshop to measure competency growth and effectiveness.
