Overview

I led the design and development of the Affirming Care Upstander Module, an interactive eLearning experience and quiz that enables UCLA Health employees to earn a Progress Flag badge to add to their uniforms—signaling to patients their knowledge and commitment to fostering a safe, affirming environment for LGBTQ+ staff, patients, and families.

My Role

I was responsible for the end-to-end development of the module and Upstander badge quiz, including instructional design, visual design, and eLearning development. I also collaborated with DEI stakeholders to align the content with UCLA Health’s inclusivity goals and accurately represent the diverse LGBTQ+ community.

Project Leadership

Managed all aspects of the project, including:

  • Defining project scope, budget, and timelines.
  • Setting up project tracking systems.
  • Facilitating all stakeholder meetings to ensure alignment.
  • Ensuring the project was completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Visual Design

Developed the project’s visual identity, including:

  • Creating a Style Guide to ensure consistency across all assets.
  • Producing all banners, graphic collages, custom vector art, and software-specific recreations.
  • Ensuring all visual elements aligned with project goals.

eLearning Development

Created all multimedia elements, including:

  • Developing interactive knowledge checks and complex quiz activity in Storyline.
  • Building the complete Rise module to ensure a seamless user experience and LMS integration.

Process

The iterative design process, using action mapping, prototyping, and continuous refinement, ensured a highly engaging and practical learning experience. This involved:

1. Discovery

Gathering project requirements, defining scope and budget, identifying stakeholders, and creating a Project Charter.

2. Design

Developing a Design Document outlining learning outcomes and instructional strategies, creating a Style Guide with mockups, and prototyping key interactive and UI elements.

3. Development

Building the module and module assets with various software, ensuring accessibility and responsiveness, incorporating stakeholder feedback, and refining interactions and visuals.

4. Deployment

Deploying the module to UCLA Health’s Cornerstone LMS, conducting quality control reviews, and documenting future updates.
